Nearly 100% of these journals accept electronic submissions, so be sure to visit the submission guidelines page when you visit each site for complete details. Don’t just look for places to get your work published, though (of course, do that, but don’t JUST do that)! While you’re visiting these webzines, read, read and read some more! Not all of the magazines on this list are created equal, by any means, but much fabulous reading awaits the selective surfer. And it’s all FREE!

TOP 20 ONLINE LITERARY MAGAZINES

This top 20 list is lifted whole cloth from www.everywritersresource.com, and it really does represent the cream of the online crop. The factors used to judge are readership, consistency of publishing, quality of publishing, and when they were established.
1. Narrative Magazine
Est. 2003 and has published many great authors including Tobias Wolff and Rick Bass. It is also widely read with close to 100,000 views per issue.
2. Jacket Magazine
Est. 1997 and has been featured in Time Magazine. The online magazine is one of the best. They appeared in Best American Poetry (BAP) in 2004 and 2006.
3. La Petite Zine
Est. 1999 and is always entertaining. Appeared in BAP in 2004.
4. Mudlark
Est. 1995 and is a full text publisher of online chapbooks. They publish a series of poems from each author. They are always a good read.
5. Slope
Est. 1999 and is hands down one of best publications online. They were included in BAP in 2002.
6. failbetter
Est. 2000 and is always publishing good work. They were included in BAP in 2006.
7. Evergreen Review
Est. 1959 as a print publication that ended in the 1970s. It was reincarnated as an online literary magazine in 1999. Generally it’s a wonderful read.
8. Red River Review
Est. 1999 and is a wonderful electronic publications that is ever consistent. (Suspended publication after August 2007, but will hopefully return soon).
9. Xconnect
Est. 1995, published in association with The University of Pennsylvania’s Kelly’s Writers House. They’ve published poets like Stephen Dunn and Lyn Hejinian, and they are always an outstanding read.
10. Big Bridge
Est. 1997 and is always publishing great writers.
11. The Summerset Review
Est. 2003 and is consistently publishing great.
12. McSweeney’s Internet Tendency
Est. 1999 and is one of the best online publications on the web. It has published many outstanding authors, and is tremendously popular.
13. The Cortland Review
Est. 1997 and has published many outstanding poets. Their website boasts 350,000 visits a month.
14. Mad Hatter’s Review
Est. 2005. The Mad Hatter’s Review is by far the youngest magazine on our list, but it has a lot to offer. They publish fiction, art, music, and poetry. It is an interesting site with many editors to keep it safe. They pride themselves on having a new way of a approaching web publishing, and they maybe right.
15. 2 River Review
Est. 1996, and is has for the last 11 years Richard Long has been publishing high quality work from many great authors. The journal does not get the recognition it deserves.
16. Stirring
Est. 1999 and has consistently published great work.
17. Café Irreal
Est. 1999 and is one of the best online literary magazines for fiction. They consistently publish great work.
18. The Adirondack Review
Est. 2000 and consistently publishing outstanding works.
